Rottenburg am NeckarFounded in year 98 as a Roman town, Sumelocenna. Rottenburg’s history is a long one. The city was already one of the most important settlements in the province of Germania Superior back in Roman times. In the 14th century Count Rudolf von Hohenberg sold the city and the entire earldom to Duke Leopold III of Austria. This meant that the little city on the Neckar River suddenly became Austrian territory and remained so for four hundred years to come. Rottenburg did not become part of Württemberg until 1806. “En Rauteburg stoht uf dr Bruck e heiliger Sankt Nepomuk,” wrote the poet Josef Eberle in Swabian dialect under the pen name Sebastian Blau. In English it means: “Holy Saint Neopmuk stands on the bridge in Rottenburg.” Large plaques describing the life and work of this native poet have been mounted along the walkway on the banks of the Neckar. The Neckar, once the city’s life blood, becomes a cause of annual celebration on the last weekend in June. That is when thousands of visitors come to attend the Neckar festival each year. Approximately 300 stands are set up on both sides of the Neckar, featuring music, cabaret groups and a large antique, flea and handicrafts market. Source And the hometown of MY PENPAL CLAUDIA! |
